316 Stainless Steel Enclosures
316 Stainless Steel Enclosures Applications
Type 316 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless and heat-resisting steel with superior corrosion resistance as compared to other chromium-nickel steels when exposed to many types of chemical corrodents such as sea water, brine solutions, and other highly corrosive environments.
Since Type 316 stainless steel alloy contains molybdenum giving the metal a greater resistance to chemical attack than 304. Type 316 is durable, easy-to-fabricate, clean, weld and finish. It is considerably more resistant to solutions of sulfuric acid, chlorides, bromides, iodides and fatty acids at high temperature. Stainless steels containing molybdenum are required in the manufacture of certain pharmaceuticals in order to avoid excessive metallic contamination.
Type 316 SS electrical enclosures are used in coastal areas, marine applications subject to sea sprays, industrial equipment exposed to corrosive process chemicals used to make such products as inks, textiles, bleaches, photographic chemicals, and rubber, and any area subject to high exposures of chloride (including de-icing salts).

316 Stainless Steel Electrical Enclosure Advantages
- Superior Resistance to Chloride - Corrosive salts can be present in many areas of the country. In addition to coastal areas, sea sprays, and salt in rain water, heavy exposure to chloride can also be present in many parts of the country that use de-icing salts on roadways. Salt-laden roads in colder climates can sometimes create even heavier salt deposits than coastal areas. The de-icing salts become airborne via dust and road mist that allows them to travel significant distances from busy roads and deposit on surrounding structures including electrical enclosures, buildings, exterior furniture, lamp posts, etc…
- Resistance to Corrosive Chemicals - The addition of molybdenum increases the metal’s resistance to acetic, sulfuric, and sulfurous acids as well as many industrial chemicals and solvents. These types of corrosive process chemicals are used to make a wide variety of products including inks, textiles, photographic chemicals, paper, textiles, rubber, and bleaches.
- Better Resistance to Cracking & Pitting - 316 Stainless Steel offers a reduced risk to stress corrosion cracking, improved creep resistance, and better protection against pitting and crevice corrosion.
Stainless Steel Selection Guide ASTM-A240
Stainless Steel 304 (S30400): Low-carbon modification of type 302 for restriction of carbide precipitation during welding. Chemical and food processing equipment; brewing equipment; cryogenic vessels; gutters; downspouts; flashings.
Stainless Steel 304L (S30403): Extra-low-carbon modification of type 304 for further restriction of carbide precipitation during welding. Coal hopper linings; tanks for liquid fertilizer and tomato paste.
Stainless Steel 316 (S31600): Higher corrosion resistance than types 302 and 304; high creep strength. Chemical and pulp handling equipment; photographic equipment; brandy vats; fertilizer parts; ketchup cooking kettles; yeast tubs.
Stainless Steel 316L (S31603): Extra-low-carbon modification of type 316 Welded construction where intergranular carbide precipitation must be avoided. Type 316 application requiring extensive welding.
Stainless Steel 321 (S32100): Stabilized for weldments subject to severe corrosive conditions, and for service from 800 to 1600 F. Aircraft exhaust manifolds; boiler shells;process equipment; expansion joints; cabin heaters; fire walls; flexible couplings, pressure vessels.
