Enclosure Ratings
Comparison of environmental rating standards for electrical enclosures
Here’s a side-by-side look at the environmental ratings between the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) (cUL in Canada), CSA Group (CSA), for electrical enclosure types in Class I/Div II and non-hazardous locations.
NEMA provides guidelines for standard degrees of minimal protection. The organization does not test or verify the environmental integrity of any enclosure they rate. Purchasers should be cautious of any manufacturer claiming they provide a NEMA rated enclosure without third-party testing.
UL is a global independent safety science company with more than a century of expertise in innovating safety solutions from the public adoption of electricity to new breakthroughs in sustainability, renewable energy, and nanotechnology. An enclosure manufacturer that provides the enclosure with a UL label insures the product has been tested and will meet the environmental rating. A typical UL inspection happens on a regular basis where the local inspector insures that the correct material has been used (via Material Test Report), material traceability, all measurement devices are calibrated and certified, the proper gasket is used, proper spacing on clamping device, the flange design, and gasket spacing are correct and finally, a serialized UL label is installed in the enclosure ensuring the final rating for the customer.

NEMA Enclosure Ratings
The National Electrical Manufacturer Association uses a standard rating system that defines the types of environments in which an electrical enclosure can be used, and frequently signifies a fixed enclosure's ability to withstand certain environment.
